walk 26 - brodick to lamlash
For those who are not inclined to scale the Alpine crags of Goat Fell and the surrounding peaks, this walk offers a challenging scramble up a hill, albeit on a smaller scale. This walk also links the two chief towns of Arran: Lamlash, which was condisidered to be the capital town in the past; and, Brodick, which hosts the ferry terminal and is the largest town on Arran today.
From the ferry terminal car park and bus terminus, turn left and walk up the steep Lamlash Road out of Brodick. There are a couple of roads on the left, one of them going to Strathwillan. However, keep on walking until you find the road that leads to the Corriegills farms. This is a quiet Scottish lowland-like road supported by high bushes and trees, with a back view to Goat Fell (photo 1). The road gradually becomes steeper (photo 2), and passes through pastoral land (photo 3). The road becomes narrower and the surrounding land soon becomes rugged and more heavily forested (photo 4). After a short woodland section, there is a steady climb up a grassy hill towards the Dun Fionn ridge (photo 5).
The walker is presented with some options at the trig point (photo 7). One is to follow the ridge down towards the sea, and follow a narrow path alongside the rocky shore (photo 6). Another is to turn right and climb up towards the highest point of the hill between Lamlash and Brodick, which overlooks the farmland through which the walker has crossed (photo 8). In any case, all roads lead down to the beach outside Lamlash (photos 9, 10). If you are descending along the route past Clauchlands Farm, follow all signs, and beware of bulls.
